What is the Coaching System?

It is a scheme set up by the SBA, SIBA, SWBA, and SWIBA to make Bowls Coaching available to ALL Clubs and Association Members in Scotland.

What is the Structure?

Two representatives from each of the above Associations form the Scottish Bowls Coaching Committee.  The SBCC is responsible for the administration of the Scheme and representatives report back to the Associations after each meeting.  The National Director of Coaching (appointed by the SBCC) attends those meetings and gives reports on coaching status, strategies, planning and future commitments. Under the charge of the National Director of Coaching are:

Ø      Regional Supervisors of Coaching (10 in number) They are responsible for the administration of several SBA Districts in Scotland called Regions, based on specific geographical locations.

Ø      Regional Coaches They are responsible for the administration and liaison with Regional Supervisors and Area Coaches for specific districts in a region.

Ø Area Coaches They are responsible for the administration and liaison with a number of Club Coaches and Clubs within a district.

Ø      Club Coaches They are responsible for all coaching matters at their respective Clubs.

What is the aim?

To provide a standardised form of Bowls Coaching in Scotland.  To train Club Coaches based on the “Scottish Bowls Coaching Manual”.  To assess experienced Coaches as Advanced Coaches.

Who does the Training?

The Regional Supervisors, Regional Coaches and Area Coaches who have all undergone training and are qualified to give instruction and training to potential coaches.

How long does a Training Course take?

For a Club Coach or Non-Association Coach – normally 12 – 16 hours in 2 hour sessions approximately before assessment – ALL dependant on the potential coach’s application to the course.

Advanced Coaching Courses are of a self-study nature by the applicant who is provided with “Advanced Coaching Manual” and a video on “Causes” and “Remedies” along with literature containing “Trial Questions and Answers”, also information about “Body Mechanics”, etc.   The applicant sets the time scale for assessment.   In some areas classes are held over a 3 week period with assessment held at end.
